Cycle network
A growing network of bike lanes and shared routes, connected to 35 km of paved trail to Kimberley.
The network began with the 9 km paved Rotary Way trail, which now connects to the 26 km NorthStar Rails to Trails, so you can ride from Idlewild Park to downtown Kimberley without leaving the trail. New routes from the 2016 Parks and Recreation Master Plan are being added in phases.

Bike lanes and shared roads
Bike lanes
Marked with a bike symbol and diamond signs, on 7th Avenue (11th Street South to 2nd Street South) and College Way. Drivers can’t drive, stop or park in them. When passing a slower rider, ring your bell, shoulder check and pass on the left with at least 1 metre of space.
Shared roads
Marked with “Share the Road” signs and sharrows, on 11th Street, 11th Avenue and 14th Avenue. Ride about 1 metre from the curb or parked cars to avoid debris and opening doors. Drivers wait until it’s safe, then pass with at least 1 metre.
Rules of the road
Under the BC Motor Vehicle Act, cyclists have the same rights and duties as drivers and can be ticketed.
- Wear a helmet. It’s the law.
- Ride on the right, in single file.
- Don’t ride on sidewalks or crosswalks unless a sign allows it.
- Don’t pass on the right unless the vehicle ahead is turning left or you’re in a bike lane.
- Keep at least one hand on the handlebars, and carry only as many riders as the bike is built for.
