BC Energy Step Code
New homes and residential buildings in Cranbrook must meet Step 2 of the BC Energy Step Code.
The Energy Step Code is a provincial standard that lets cities require more energy-efficient new buildings than the base Building Code. Cranbrook adopted it in Building Bylaw 4029, 2021.
| Since | Requirement |
|---|---|
| January 1, 2021 | Step 1 for all new Part 9 homes |
| August 1, 2021 | Step 2 for all new Part 9 and Part 3 residential buildings. About 10% more efficient than the 2018 Building Code. |
How to comply
The Step Code sets a result, not a recipe, so you choose the materials and methods. You’ll need to:
- Have an energy model done during design
- Test the building’s air-tightness when it’s finished
- Show your heating and mechanical system efficiency
Find an energy advisor. Regional case studies and training are in the Building a Legacy toolkit.
Rebates
- CleanBC Better Homes new construction: up to $15,000 for eligible new homes
