Business licences
Every business operating in Cranbrook needs a City business licence, including home businesses.
That includes Cranbrook businesses that mostly work outside the city. Licensing lets the City check that a business meets safety, zoning and consumer protection rules. You can ask any business to show its licence.
Fees
| Licence | Fee | For |
|---|---|---|
| Annual | $150 | Most businesses |
| Seasonal | $75 | Up to 6 months a year, such as Christmas tree lots or snowmobile rentals. Not prorated. |
| Temporary | $75 | A licensed business adding a second location for up to 6 months. Not prorated. |
| Inter-community | $75 | Mobile businesses working in both Cranbrook and Kimberley, on top of an annual licence where you’re based |
| Change to a licence | $50 | New owner, new location or other changes |
Fees aren’t refundable. A licence isn’t valid until fees are paid, or if the owner, address or other details change and you don’t tell the City.
Before you apply
- Check that your zoning allows your business at that location.
- Get permits for any renovations or construction.
- Check fire safety requirements.
- Get any other approvals you need, such as Interior Health (food, tattoos, daycares, care homes) or the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch. The City will ask for proof.
Apply
- Fill in the business licence applicationPDF. The same form is used for changes and inter-community licences.
- Sign it, or have your agent sign.
- Drop it off, mail it or email it to City Hall, 40 10th Avenue South, Cranbrook, BC V1C 2M8.
Processing takes about two weeks, and usually includes zoning, building and fire inspections. Renewals can be paid online.
