Be prepared

Fire safety at home

  • Put smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level, ideally interconnected. Test them monthly and replace them after 10 years.
  • Make an escape plan with two ways out of every room, and practise it.
  • Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling, or turn the stove off.
  • Keep anything that can burn at least 1 metre (3 feet) from furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves and space heaters, and keep children back too.
  • Replace damaged cords. Smoke outside, in deep, sturdy ashtrays. Blow out candles when you leave the room.

Become a firefighter

The department, founded in 1900, fills most career positions from its auxiliary (paid on-call) firefighters, who get ongoing training. Openings are posted on City jobs.
