Filming in Cranbrook
Permits and support for film, television, commercial and photography projects.
Cranbrook sits in the southern Rocky Mountain Trench, with mountains, old-growth forest and town locations close together. A Film and Commercial Project Permit is needed for all location filming and commercial production in the city, except newscasts.
How to apply
- Get a business licence. Companies from outside Cranbrook need a temporary licence.
- Send a complete application at least 14 days before you start. Applications are handled in the order complete ones arrive.
- Sign a film licence agreement with the City. Small projects at a single park location may not need one.
- Notify residents and businesses on the affected block at least 7 days before filming.
Include in your application
- Any City parks, buildings or streets you want to use. Closing a street needs the City Engineer’s approval.
- Special effects: smoke, fire, explosions, weapons or stunts
- Drone flights. Flights near the airport need an approved flight plan.
- Any set building or changes to a location
- Noise outside bylaw hours, if you need an exemption
Insurance
Commercial general liability of at least $5,000,000 per occurrence, naming the City as additional insured. Drone work also needs aviation liability insurance.
Student projects
Student projects don’t need a permit, but filming in parks, on trails or in City buildings needs permission. Ask at least 7 days ahead.
Outside the city
Provincial and national parks need their own permits: see BC Parks film permits and Kootenay Film. Follow Actsafe and WorkSafeBC guidelines.
