Forestry

Forestry has shaped Cranbrook's economy for over a century, and there's room to grow.

  • 8 post and pole mills, more than any other region in BC
  • 6,872 jobs created or supported by forestry
  • 10% of jobs in the Kootenay region
  • $442 million in labour income

The resource

The Rocky Mountain Forest District covers about 2.6 million hectares of montane forest of larch, pine and fir, with an annual harvest of more than 1.6 million cubic metres. One of the world’s largest producers of sustainable lumber, pulp and paper operates in the area, along with small and medium sawmills that supply industry and local builders.

Why here

  • A skilled, experienced workforce across forestry, engineering, trades and technology
  • Land already zoned for manufacturing
  • Air, rail and intermodal transportation

Opportunity: wildfire risk reduction

Reducing wildfire risk is a top priority for the region. Businesses that can use unmerchantable wood from fuel reduction work have a ready supply.
