Mining and exploration
Cranbrook is close to some of the world's top steelmaking coal mines, which employ more than 4,000 people locally.
The nearby coalfields are among BC’s most productive, and their steelmaking (metallurgical) coal ships around the world. The mines use advanced technology such as autonomous haul trucks and equipment tracking, which supports Cranbrook’s growing tech cluster.
Why steelmaking coal matters
Steelmaking coal is used to make the steel in bridges, hospitals and schools, and in wind turbines, solar installations and vehicles. Canada is the world’s fourth-largest exporter, and about 85% of Canada’s supply comes from BC and Alberta. Most BC coal leaves through West Coast ports; some goes east by rail.
The surrounding mountains also have mineral mines, rock quarries and small gold operations.
