Water conservation

Cranbrook's water supply is limited, and summer is when we use the most. Small changes add up.

Nearby lakes and rivers can make water seem endless, but our supply is finite. Most of it comes from snowmelt and rain, yet we use the most in summer, when natural supply is lowest. Household water use can jump by as much as 60% in warm months, mostly from watering lawns.

Across BC, almost a quarter of surface water is at or near the limit of what it can reliably supply. Growth, industry, farming and climate change are adding pressure.

Why it matters

  • Less water to treat and pump, which lowers costs
  • Less strain on pipes, pumps and reservoirs
  • Less wastewater to treat
  • A more reliable supply in dry years

Many households can cut their water use by 40% or more with a few simple habits.
